P0488 Code: EGR Throttle Position Control Range/Performance

The P0488 code indicates that the EGR throttle responds electrically, but the result is not what the computer expects. Expect a loss of power or limp mode, particulate filter regenerations that do not finish and smoke on diesels. A throttle clogged with carbon is the usual cause.

What the P0488 code means

On many modern diesels a throttle in the intake (or in the exhaust) creates the pressure difference the EGR needs to recirculate exhaust gas. The computer controls it with an electric motor and a position sensor.

The computer monitors the control circuit from its own driver transistor. The P0488 code indicates that the component responds electrically, but the result is not what is expected. Before replacing the component, check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring, since they are the most common cause.

If the throttle does not move as commanded, the EGR does not work correctly and, on some engines, particulate filter regeneration does not complete. Carbon and oil from the breather clog it often.

This kind of fault is usually not solved with a multimeter, because electrically everything looks fine. You have to compare what the part says against reality: with a gauge, a thermometer, a vacuum pump, or by commanding the component with the scan tool and watching whether the physical result matches the command.

P0488 code symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Loss of power or limp mode.
  • Particulate filter regenerations that do not finish.
  • Smoke on diesels.

Likely causes of the P0488 code

  1. Throttle clogged with carbon and oil from the breather.
  2. Worn throttle motor that does not reach the commanded position.
  3. Defective position sensor that gives wrong readings.
  4. Corroded connector, which adds resistance.

How to diagnose the P0488 code step by step

  1. Command the component with the scan tool and check whether it responds.
  2. Check the fuse and relay.
  3. Measure the supply at the connector: battery voltage with the key on or when it is commanded.
  4. Measure the component resistance and compare it with the manual. Also check the insulation to ground.
  5. Check the control wire for continuity and for shorts.
  6. Command the throttle with the scan tool and compare the desired and actual position.
  7. Clean the throttle and check that it moves smoothly.

How to fix the P0488 code

  • Repair the connector, the wiring or the power supply.
  • Replace the EGR throttle if it does not respond with correct power and control.
  • Clear the codes and verify that the monitor completes.

Technical reference data

  • DC motor controlled by PWM, with a 5 V position sensor.
  • Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your engine.

Frequently asked questions about P0488

Can I drive with a P0488 code?
With caution, and keep an eye on engine temperature and power. A P0488 code can bring a loss of power or limp mode.
What does the EGR throttle do?
On many modern diesels a throttle in the intake (or in the exhaust) creates the pressure difference the EGR needs to recirculate exhaust gas. The computer controls it with an electric motor and a position sensor.
Do I always have to replace the part?
No. Check the fuses, relays, connectors and wiring first.
How much does it cost to fix P0488?
Roughly $100 to $700, depending on whether it is a cleaning job, wiring or the throttle itself.
What does the P0488 code mean?
It is a generic OBD2 code that means the EGR throttle responds electrically but the physical result is not what the computer expects.
What is the most common cause of P0488?
A throttle clogged with carbon and oil from the breather. A worn motor, a defective position sensor or a corroded connector can also set it.
