P0487Generic code

P0487 Code: EGR Throttle Position Control Circuit

The P0487 code indicates an electrical fault in the control circuit of the EGR throttle. Expect a loss of power or limp mode, particulate filter regenerations that do not finish and smoke on diesels. Soot and oil from the breather clog it often.

What the P0487 code means

On many modern diesels a throttle in the intake (or in the exhaust) creates the pressure difference the EGR needs to recirculate exhaust gas. The computer controls it with an electric motor and a position sensor.

The computer monitors the control circuit from its own driver transistor. The P0487 code indicates an electrical fault in the control circuit. Before replacing the component, check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring, since they are the most common cause.

If the throttle does not move as commanded, the EGR does not work correctly and, on some engines, particulate filter regeneration does not complete. Carbon and oil from the breather clog it often.

Always start with the simplest things: fuse, relay and connector. Then check power, ground and signal with the part still connected (using back-probes), and finally the continuity of each wire to the computer. Only if all of that checks out should you replace the component.

P0487 code symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Loss of power or limp mode.
  • Particulate filter regenerations that do not finish.
  • Smoke on diesels.

Likely causes of the P0487 code

  1. Damaged connector, whether loose, broken or corroded.
  2. Fuse or relay blown or with worn contacts.
  3. Cut or shorted wiring between the component and the computer.
  4. Failed component: a damaged coil, motor or internal electronics.

How to diagnose the P0487 code step by step

  1. Command the component with the scan tool and check whether it responds.
  2. Check the fuse and relay.
  3. Measure the supply at the connector: battery voltage with the key on or when it is commanded.
  4. Measure the component resistance and compare it with the manual. Also check the insulation to ground.
  5. Check the control wire for continuity and for shorts.
  6. Command the throttle with the scan tool and compare the desired and actual position.
  7. Clean the throttle and check that it moves smoothly.

How to fix the P0487 code

  • Repair the connector, the wiring or the power supply.
  • Replace the EGR throttle if it does not respond with correct power and control.
  • Clear the codes and verify that the monitor completes.

Technical reference data

  • DC motor controlled by PWM, with a 5 V position sensor.
  • Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your engine.

Frequently asked questions about P0487

Can I drive with a P0487 code?
With caution, and keep an eye on engine temperature and power. A P0487 code can bring a loss of power or limp mode.
What does the EGR throttle do?
On many modern diesels a throttle in the intake (or in the exhaust) creates the pressure difference the EGR needs to recirculate exhaust gas. The computer controls it with an electric motor and a position sensor.
Do I always have to replace the part?
No. Check the fuses, relays, connectors and wiring first.
How much does it cost to fix P0487?
Roughly $100 to $700, depending on whether it is wiring, a cleaning job or the throttle itself.
What does the P0487 code mean?
It is a generic OBD2 code for an electrical fault in the control circuit of the EGR throttle.
What is the most common cause of P0487?
A damaged connector, a blown fuse or relay, or wiring cut or shorted on the way to the computer. Check those before you buy the throttle.
