P0217Generic code

P0217 Code: Engine Over Temperature Condition

The P0217 code means the engine reached an excessive temperature. It is a serious code: stop the engine and check the cooling system before you go any further. Repairs run from about $20 to $3,000.

What the P0217 code means

The computer watches the coolant temperature. If it goes over the safety limit (often 115 to 125 °C, or about 239 to 257 °F), it stores the P0217 code and may turn on a protection mode: cylinder cutoff, an RPM limit, or turning off the air conditioning.

If you keep driving with the engine overheated, you can warp the cylinder head and damage the head gasket in a few minutes.

Some engines have a protection strategy that alternates the fuel cutoff between cylinders, so the air coming in cools them and the vehicle can reach a safe place. Even so, every minute with the engine overheated raises the risk of serious damage. After an overheating event, check the oil. If it looks milky, coolant got in and the head gasket is damaged.

P0217 code symptoms

  • Temperature gauge in the red.
  • Steam or a smell of coolant.
  • Loss of power (protection mode).
  • Cooling fan running at full speed.
  • Temperature warning light on.

Likely causes of the P0217 code

  1. Low coolant level from a leak.
  2. Radiator fan not working.
  3. Thermostat stuck closed.
  4. Damaged water pump.
  5. Clogged radiator.
  6. Damaged head gasket. Combustion gases get into the coolant.

How to diagnose the P0217 code step by step

  1. Stop the engine and let it cool down. Do not open the coolant reservoir cap while it is hot.
  2. Check the coolant level and look for leaks.
  3. Check that the fan comes on at its set temperature or with the air conditioning on.
  4. Measure the radiator temperature with an infrared thermometer, at the inlet and the outlet.
  5. Do a CO2 test on the coolant to rule out the head gasket.
  6. Check the oil. A milky look or a rising level means coolant is getting into the oil.

How to fix the P0217 code

  • Repair the leak and refill with the correct coolant.
  • Repair the fan (relay, motor, sensor).
  • Replace the thermostat or the water pump.
  • Have the head gasket checked if the engine overheated badly.
  • After the repair, bleed the cooling system well. An air bubble next to the sensor can cause another overheating event.

Technical reference data

  • Normal temperature: 85 to 105 °C (about 185 to 221 °F).
  • Typical limit for the code: 115 to 125 °C (about 239 to 257 °F).
  • These values are a rough guide, so check the manufacturer's data for your engine.

Brand-specific notes

On aluminum engines, overheating can warp the cylinder head easily. If the engine boiled over, have the flatness of the cylinder head checked.

Whatever the brand, treat a P0217 code as urgent, and do not clear it and keep driving before you find the reason for the overheating.

Frequently asked questions about P0217

Can I drive with a P0217 code?
No. Pull over in a safe place and shut off the engine. Driving with an overheated engine can ruin it in a few minutes.
Can I add water?
In an emergency, yes, with the engine cold. Afterward, refill with the correct coolant.
What damage can it cause?
A warped cylinder head, a damaged head gasket and, in severe cases, a seized engine. That is why the P0217 code should never be ignored.
How much does it cost to fix P0217?
Roughly $20 to $3,000, depending on the damage. A hose or a coolant refill is at the low end, and head gasket or engine damage is at the high end.
What is the most common cause of P0217?
Low coolant from a leak is the first thing to check. After that, look at the radiator fan, the thermostat stuck closed, the water pump and a clogged radiator.
Will a P0217 code clear itself?
The light may go out once the engine cools down, but the cause is still there. Find out why the engine overheated before you drive it again.
