P0219 Code: Engine Overspeed Condition
The P0219 code means the engine went over its maximum RPM. It is usually caused by a bad downshift on a manual transmission. You can drive, but listen for abnormal engine noise.

- Medium
- Can I keep driving?
- Yes, no immediate risk
- Estimated cost
- $0 to $3,000

What the P0219 code means
The computer cuts the fuel injection when the engine reaches its RPM limit. But if the engine goes past that limit for mechanical reasons, such as downshifting into too low a gear, it stores the P0219 code. On a diesel, it can point to a runaway caused by turbo oil.
Interference engines are the most sensitive to overspeed: above a certain RPM, the valves may not close in time (valve float) and hit the pistons. If the overspeed was big and the engine knocks or loses compression, it has to be checked before you keep using it.
P0219 code symptoms
- Usually none after the event.
- Check engine light on.
- Abnormal engine noise if there was damage.
Likely causes of the P0219 code
- Wrong downshift on a manual transmission.
- Clutch or transmission slipping.
- Diesel runaway. Turbo oil gets into the intake.
- Wrong RPM signal. Look at the CKP sensor.
How to diagnose the P0219 code step by step
- Ask how it happened.
- Check the CKP sensor if nobody remembers a real overspeed.
- Listen to the engine and check the timing if there was a big overspeed.
- Measure the compression if there was a big overspeed. Low compression in any cylinder points to damaged valves.
How to fix the P0219 code
- Clear the code and see if it comes back.
- Check the valves and the timing if there was a significant real overspeed.
- Repair the turbo if there was a diesel runaway.
- On manual transmissions, only downshift at speeds that suit each gear.
Technical reference data
- Typical RPM limit: 6,000 to 7,000 RPM on gasoline engines, and 4,500 to 5,000 on diesels.
- These values are a rough guide, so check the manufacturer's data for your engine.
Brand-specific notes
A big overspeed can bend valves on interference engines. If you hear knocking or lose power after a P0219 code, have the engine checked before you drive it again.
