P0216 Code: Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction

The P0216 code means the computer cannot control the injection advance on a diesel engine. It shows up mostly on electronic rotary pumps, and it can cost anywhere from $60 to $2,500 to fix. You can drive with caution, but it is a serious code.

What the P0216 code means

On diesel rotary pumps with electronic control, the computer adjusts the injection timing with an advance valve and checks the result with a sensor. If it cannot reach the advance it asked for, it stores the P0216 code.

The injection advance decides when combustion starts relative to top dead center. With too much advance you get knocking and excessive pressures. With too little advance you get smoke, a loss of power and high exhaust temperatures. The computer compares the requested advance with the actual advance, measured by a sensor on the pump (or calculated from the crankshaft and injector signals). If they do not match, it sets the P0216 code and limits engine power.

P0216 code symptoms

  • Loss of power.
  • Black or white smoke.
  • Hard starting.
  • Combustion knock.

Likely causes of the P0216 code

  1. Pump advance valve.
  2. Low supply pressure. Look at the fuel filter or the lift pump.
  3. Advance sensor or position sensor.
  4. Pump timing. The pump may be set wrong.
  5. Internal wear in the pump.

How to diagnose the P0216 code step by step

  1. Compare the desired and actual advance with a scan tool.
  2. Measure the supply pressure.
  3. Test the advance valve.
  4. Verify the pump timing.
  5. Read the desired and actual advance at idle and at 2,000 RPM. A constant difference points to the pump timing. A difference that grows with engine speed points to the valve or to the fuel supply.

How to fix the P0216 code

  • Correct the fuel supply.
  • Replace the advance valve or repair the pump.
  • Set the pump timing correctly.
  • After the repair, check that the actual advance follows the desired advance across the whole RPM range.

Technical reference data

  • Typical advance at idle: a few degrees before TDC (top dead center).
  • These values are a rough guide, so check the manufacturer's data for your engine.

Brand-specific notes

The P0216 code is frequent on diesel engines with an electronic injection pump. This is what is reported for these brands.

P0216 on Ford

Frequent on the Power Stroke 7.3 with an electronic pump.

P0216 on GM

Frequent on the 6.5 diesel with an electronic pump.

Frequently asked questions about P0216

Can I drive with a P0216 code?
With caution. The computer limits power to protect the engine, and wrong injection timing can cause knocking and high exhaust temperatures, so do not keep driving it hard.
Is it the injection pump?
Many times it is, but check the fuel supply first. A clogged filter or a weak lift pump can set the P0216 code too.
Does the P0216 code show up on gasoline engines?
No. It is specific to diesel engines.
How much does it cost to fix P0216?
Roughly $60 to $2,500. A fuel filter or an advance valve is at the low end, and a pump repair or replacement is at the high end.
What is the most common cause of P0216?
Problems with the pump advance valve or with low fuel supply pressure are the first things to check, followed by the advance sensor and the pump timing.
Will a P0216 code clear itself?
Not if the cause is real, such as a worn pump or a bad valve. The light may go out and come back if the problem is intermittent, but the fault is still there until you repair it.
