C0896 Code: Device Voltage Range or Performance
The C0896 code means the supply voltage reaching the ABS or brake module is outside the correct range, either too low or too high, for some time. The cause is usually outside the module: the battery, the charging system or the grounds.
- Severity
- Medium
- Can I keep driving?
- Yes, but with caution
- Estimated cost
- $0 to $300

What the C0896 code means
The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.
The module needs a stable voltage, normally between about 9 and 16 V. If it falls below or rises above those limits, the module shuts off the ABS and the stability control to protect itself and stores the C0896 code.
The cause is usually outside the module: a weak battery, an alternator that charges too little or too much, corroded grounds or loose terminals. It often appears together with voltage codes from other modules.
Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).
C0896 code symptoms
- ABS and stability warning lights on, sometimes only intermittently.
- Other warning lights at startup.
- A battery that runs down.
Likely causes of the C0896 code
- Weak battery. The most common cause.
- Alternator that charges too little or too much. Confirm it with the tests in the diagnosis section.
- Corroded ground at the module or the hydraulic unit. Confirm it with the tests in the diagnosis section.
- Loose or sulfated battery terminals. Confirm it with the tests in the diagnosis section.
- Fuse or supply connector of the module. Check the lock, the pins and any moisture or corrosion.
How to diagnose the C0896 code step by step
- Measure the battery voltage at rest and with the engine running.
- Load test the battery.
- Measure the voltage drop across the module ground. It should be under 0.2 V.
- Inspect the terminals.
How to fix the C0896 code
- Replace the battery or repair the charging system.
- Clean and tighten the grounds and terminals.
- Clear the C0896 code and verify.
Technical reference data
- Module operating voltage: roughly 9 to 16 V.
- Normal charging voltage: 13.5 to 14.7 V.
- These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
Treat this as an electrical system problem first and a brake problem second. A battery test and a charging test settle most cases.
C0896 on Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac
This code is very common on Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.
