C0710Generic code

C0710 Code: Steering Position Signal

The C0710 code means the ABS or stability module is not getting a consistent signal from the steering angle sensor. It often shows up after an alignment, a steering repair or a battery change, because the sensor needs to be calibrated.

What the C0710 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The steering angle sensor reports how far and in which direction you turn the wheel. The stability control compares that with the real rotation of the vehicle. If the signal is missing or not consistent, the module stores the C0710 code and disables the stability control.

It often appears after an alignment, a steering repair or a battery change, because the sensor needs to be calibrated with the wheel straight.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

C0710 code symptoms

  • Stability control and ABS warning lights on.
  • The stability control does not work.

Likely causes of the C0710 code

  1. Sensor not calibrated after an alignment or a steering repair.
  2. Failed angle sensor. Confirm it by comparing its reading with the real value.
  3. Clockspring or column connector. Check the lock, the pins and any moisture or corrosion.
  4. Steering wheel out of alignment after the alignment.

How to diagnose the C0710 code step by step

  1. Read the steering wheel angle in live data. It should read close to 0 with the wheel straight.
  2. Calibrate the sensor with the scan tool.
  3. Check the alignment.
  4. Check the sensor connector on the column.

How to fix the C0710 code

  • Calibrate the steering angle sensor.
  • Correct the alignment.
  • Replace the sensor if it cannot be calibrated.

Technical reference data

  • Angle with the steering wheel straight: close to 0 degrees.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

If the steering wheel is crooked after the alignment, have the shop fix it before calibrating, because calibrating on a crooked wheel teaches the system the wrong center.

C0710 on Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick

This code is common on these makes after alignments.

Frequently asked questions about C0710

What does the C0710 code mean?
It means the ABS or stability module is not getting a consistent signal from the steering angle sensor.
Can I drive with a C0710 code?
Yes, but the C0710 code leaves the stability control off. Drive carefully in curves and on slippery surfaces.
Why does it show up after an alignment?
Because the sensor has to learn the new position of the straight steering wheel.
Does it calibrate itself?
On some vehicles yes, by driving in a straight line. On others a scan tool is needed.
How much does it cost to fix C0710?
Roughly between $0 and $400. Driving to relearn is free, and a new sensor is at the high end.
