P0894 Code: Transmission Component Slipping
The P0894 code means an internal clutch or brake in the transmission is slipping. Check the fluid first, because if it is burnt, the transmission most likely needs a repair. Driving should be kept to a minimum until it is checked.

What the P0894 code means
The computer detects slipping by comparing input and output speeds with the theoretical ratio of the gear, though it cannot tie the slip to one particular gear. On any transmission code, the first check is the fluid. Check the level using the manufacturer procedure, which often means the engine running and the fluid at a specific temperature. The fluid should be red or pink and should not smell burnt. Low or degraded fluid causes slipping, harsh shifts and solenoid or ratio codes that disappear once it is corrected.
Read up on the P0700 code as well, since it explains how transmission codes are read and why you need a scan tool that can talk to the transmission module.
If the fluid smells burnt or carries particles, changing only the fluid can make the symptoms worse for a while on a badly worn transmission. In that case, have it diagnosed at a transmission specialist before you decide on a repair. The P0894 code is the computer telling you slip is already happening.
P0894 code symptoms
- Engine rpm rises without the vehicle accelerating.
- Late shifts.
- Burning smell.
Likely causes of the P0894 code
- Low fluid level. The pump draws in air.
- Degraded fluid. Particles clog the solenoids.
- Worn clutches. They take longer to engage.
- Insufficient pressure. A weak solenoid or pump.
How to diagnose the P0894 code step by step
- Check the fluid level, color and smell.
- Compare engine speed in each gear against the expected ratio.
- Run a pressure test.
How to fix the P0894 code
- Correct the fluid level or change the fluid.
- Repair the transmission if there is wear.
Technical reference data
- Normal fluid temperature: 70 to 95 °C (158 to 203 °F).
- Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is common on CVT and conventional automatic transmissions with high mileage. Keep that in mind when you decide how much to spend on a repair, and weigh it against the value of the vehicle.
