C0281Generic code

C0281 Code: Brake Switch Circuit

The C0281 code means the ABS module is not getting a consistent signal from the brake pedal switch. For example, it says the brake is pressed when it is not, or it does not say so when you press it.

What the C0281 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The module uses the brake switch signal for traction control, stability control and cruise control. If the signal does not agree with the brake pressure or with what other modules see, it stores the C0281 code.

It is almost always caused by a switch that is out of adjustment or worn, a broken rubber stop on the pedal, or a brake light fuse.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

Many switches have two circuits: one for the lights and one for the modules. That is why the brake lights can look fine while the code is still stored. Always read the switch state in live data.

C0281 code symptoms

  • ABS or stability control warning lights on.
  • Brake lights that do not come on or stay on.
  • Cruise control that does not work.
  • On automatic transmissions, the shifter may not come out of Park.

Likely causes of the C0281 code

  1. Brake switch out of adjustment or failed. The most common cause.
  2. Broken rubber pedal stop. The switch ends up in the wrong position.
  3. Brake light fuse. Confirm it with the tests in the diagnosis section.
  4. Connector or wiring. Check the lock, the pins and any moisture or corrosion.

How to diagnose the C0281 code step by step

  1. Check the brake lights with the help of another person.
  2. Read the switch state in live data.
  3. Check the switch adjustment and the pedal stop.

How to fix the C0281 code

  • Adjust or replace the brake switch.
  • Replace the rubber stop if it is missing.
  • Repair the fuse or the wiring.

Technical reference data

  • Many switches have two circuits: one for the lights and one for the modules.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

A stuck shifter in Park on an automatic is a useful clue. It means the switch is not telling the vehicle the brake is pressed, which points straight at the switch or its stop.

C0281 on Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac

This code is common on Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

Frequently asked questions about C0281

What does the C0281 code mean?
It means the ABS module gets a brake pedal switch signal that is not consistent with the brake pressure or with what other modules see.
Can I drive with a C0281 code?
Yes, but check that the brake lights work. The C0281 code can leave you without brake lights, which is a safety problem.
Is it dangerous?
It can be if the brake lights do not come on. Get it repaired soon.
Why does the cruise control not work?
Because it shuts off when it does not know when you press the brake.
How much does it cost to fix C0281?
Roughly between $10 and $120. A fuse or an adjustment is at the low end, and a new switch is at the high end.
Will a C0281 code clear itself?
Only if the switch or fuse problem was temporary. A worn switch or a broken pedal stop will bring it back.
