C0265Manufacturer-specific code

C0265 Code: ABS Module Relay Circuit Failure

The C0265 code means the main relay of the ABS module is not working correctly. The ABS is left disabled, and the cause is very often a poor ground or supply to the module.

What the C0265 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The ABS module uses an internal relay to power its valves and its pump. If the relay does not close or does not open when it should, the module stores the C0265 code. Very often the problem is in the supply or the ground of the module, or in cracked internal solder joints.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

On early 2000s GM trucks this code is so common that repair kits and module repair services exist. Before that, clean and tighten the main ground of the ABS module, located near the hydraulic unit.

C0265 code symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lights on.

Likely causes of the C0265 code

  1. Loose or corroded ABS module ground. The most common cause of the C0265 code.
  2. Supply fuse that is blown or has a poor contact.
  3. Internal relay or solder joints of the module. An internal failure that specialized companies can repair.
  4. Low battery voltage or an alternator that does not charge. The module cannot activate its valves.

How to diagnose the C0265 code step by step

  1. Measure the voltage at the module supply.
  2. Measure the voltage drop across the ground.
  3. Check the fuses.

How to fix the C0265 code

  • Correct the supply and the ground.
  • Repair or replace the ABS module.

Technical reference data

  • Supply voltage: battery voltage.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

Start with the cheapest checks, the ground and the fuses. Replacing a module without checking them often leaves the same code in place.

C0265 on GM

This code is well known on GM trucks with the Kelsey-Hayes EBCM.

Frequently asked questions about C0265

What does the C0265 code mean?
It means the main relay inside the ABS module is not closing or opening when it should, so the ABS is disabled.
Can I drive with a C0265 code?
Yes, but without ABS. The normal brakes keep working, so leave extra stopping distance on wet roads.
Can the module be repaired?
Yes, there are specialized companies that do it.
What should I check first?
The ground and the fuses.
How much does it cost to fix C0265?
Between $0 and $1,200. Tightening a ground costs nothing, while replacing the module is at the high end.
Will a C0265 code clear itself?
It can if the cause was a temporary low voltage. With a bad ground or cracked solder joints it will return.
