B0081 Code: Passenger Seat Occupant Detection System
The B0081 code means there is a fault in the system that detects who is sitting in the passenger seat. The airbag on that side may stay disabled, or enabled, when it should not be.

What the B0081 code means
The occupant detection system measures the weight or pressure on the passenger seat to decide whether the passenger airbag should be active. It turns the airbag off when the seat is empty or holds a child or a child seat, and turns it on for an adult.
When the system finds a problem in its sensor, its calibration or its communication, it stores the B0081 code and lights the airbag warning light. Heavy objects on the seat, seat covers that are poorly fitted, or a sensor damaged while the seat was removed are common causes.
Caution: airbags and pretensioners contain pyrotechnic charges. Before working on the system, disconnect the battery and wait as long as the manufacturer says, normally at least 2 to 10 minutes. Never measure the resistance of an airbag directly with a multimeter, because the test current can set it off. Use the manufacturer simulation tool (a test resistor) instead.
Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).
B0081 code symptoms
- Airbag warning light on.
- A passenger airbag indicator that does not match who is actually sitting in the seat.
- The passenger airbag may stay disabled with an adult sitting there.
Likely causes of the B0081 code
- Damaged occupant sensor under the seat upholstery.
- System not calibrated after the seat was removed or repaired.
- Loose or damaged connector under the seat.
- Seat covers or accessories that change the measurement.
How to diagnose the B0081 code step by step
- Remove any objects and seat covers from the passenger seat and try again.
- Check the connector under the seat with the battery disconnected.
- Read the system data with a scan tool that can access the module.
- Recalibrate the system using the manufacturer procedure, with the seat empty.
How to fix the B0081 code
- Recalibrate the detection system.
- Repair the connector.
- Replace the sensor or the seat pad.
- Clear the B0081 code and confirm the warning light turns off.
Technical reference data
- The calibration is done with the seat empty, and sometimes with reference weights.
- Waiting time after disconnecting the battery: normally at least 2 to 10 minutes.
- These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is common on vehicles with weight-sensing passenger seats. Always follow the recalibration procedure that applies to your model, since the steps and the reference weights differ from one vehicle to another.
B0081 on Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick
The B0081 code is frequent on these makes.
B0081 on Toyota and Honda
These makes use similar systems and can set the same code.
