B0051 Code: Deployment Commanded
The B0051 code means the airbag module recorded a deployment command: it detected a crash and fired one or more airbags or pretensioners. After a deployment the module has to be replaced or reprogrammed, and the code cannot be cleared with an ordinary scan tool.

What the B0051 code means
The airbag module stores the B0051 code when it orders the airbags or seat belt pretensioners to fire because of an impact. It is a record of the crash, not a fault in the circuit.
This B0051 code cannot be cleared with an ordinary scan tool. For safety, the module locks itself and the airbag warning light stays on until the module is replaced or reprogrammed with the manufacturer tool.
Besides the module, all the airbags and pretensioners that fired have to be replaced, and in many cases so do the impact sensors and the clockspring, following the manufacturer procedure.
Caution: airbags and pretensioners contain pyrotechnic charges. Before working on the system, disconnect the battery and wait as long as the manufacturer says, normally at least 2 to 10 minutes. Never measure the resistance of an airbag directly with a multimeter, because the test current can set it off. Use the manufacturer simulation tool (a test resistor) instead.
Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).
B0051 code symptoms
- Airbag warning light on all the time.
- Airbags or pretensioners that have fired.
- Seat belts that do not retract.
Likely causes of the B0051 code
- A crash with a real deployment. This is the normal cause of the code.
- A module from a wrecked vehicle installed in the car. It already comes locked.
- Deployment caused by an electrical fault. Very uncommon.
How to diagnose the B0051 code step by step
- Confirm which airbags and pretensioners fired. Check every seating position, not only the front ones.
- Read the stored crash data with a scan tool that can access the airbag module.
- Inspect the impact sensors and wiring in the area of the collision.
How to fix the B0051 code
- Replace the airbag module, or have it reprogrammed with the proper tool.
- Replace the airbags, pretensioners and damaged components.
- Clear the codes and confirm the warning light turns off.
Technical reference data
- The warning light should come on for a few seconds when you turn the key and then go out.
- Waiting time after disconnecting the battery: normally at least 2 to 10 minutes.
- These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
In many states and countries, driving with the airbag warning light on means the vehicle cannot pass the safety inspection.
B0051 on General Motors
The definition on this page is the one General Motors and most generic scan tools use. On other makes the same number can mean something else, so confirm the text with a scan tool that reads the airbag module.
