P2649Generic code

P2649 Code: A Rocker Arm Actuator Control Circuit High (Bank 1)

The P2649 code means there is high voltage in the control circuit of the VTEC rocker arm solenoid, from an open circuit or a short to voltage. It can cause a loss of power at high rpm. The car is still drivable.

What the P2649 code means

Honda engines with VTEC have rocker arms that switch cam profile above a certain engine speed. An oil solenoid (the rocker arm actuator) and a pressure switch confirm to the computer that the switch happened. Low, dirty or wrong-viscosity oil is the first cause of these codes.

The computer watches the control circuit from its own driver transistor. The P2649 code reports high voltage in the control circuit (an open circuit or a short to voltage). Before you replace the component, check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring, which are the most common cause.

The solenoid gets 12 V from the computer when the cam profile switch is supposed to happen.

To confirm it, measure the continuity of each wire between the component connector and the computer connector with the key off. It should be under 1 ohm, and an infinite reading means that wire is open. If the wiring is good, measure the component itself: an infinite resistance confirms it is open inside.

P2649 code symptoms

  • Check engine light or another warning light on.
  • Loss of power at high rpm.

Likely causes of the P2649 code

  1. Loose or broken connector. The most frequent cause, especially after another repair.
  2. Open coil or motor, with infinite resistance.
  3. Control wire cut between the component and the computer.
  4. Short to 12 V, where the control wire touches another wire that carries voltage.

How to diagnose the P2649 code step by step

  1. Command the component with the scan tool and check whether it responds.
  2. Check the fuse and relay. Measure voltage on both sides of the fuse and swap the relay with an identical one.
  3. Measure the supply at the connector: battery voltage with the key on or when it is commanded.
  4. Measure the component resistance and compare it with the manual, and check the insulation to ground too.
  5. Check the control wire: continuity to the computer and no short circuits.

How to fix the P2649 code

  • Repair the connector, the wiring or the supply.
  • Replace the VTEC rocker arm solenoid if it does not respond with correct supply and command.
  • Clear the codes and verify.

Technical reference data

  • Typical solenoid resistance: 14 to 30 ohms.
  • Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

If the code showed up after work near the valve cover, check that the solenoid plug is seated. The P2649 code is often just a loose connector.

P2649 on Honda and Acura

This is a code specific to Honda and Acura engines with VTEC, although the definition is generic.

Frequently asked questions about P2649

Can I drive with a P2649 code?
Yes, with less power at high rpm.
What does the VTEC rocker arm solenoid do?
Honda engines with VTEC have rocker arms that switch cam profile above a certain engine speed. An oil solenoid (the rocker arm actuator) and a pressure switch confirm to the computer that the switch happened. Low, dirty or wrong-viscosity oil is the first cause of these codes.
Does the part always have to be replaced?
No. Check the fuses, relays, connectors and wiring first.
What does the P2649 code mean?
It means the voltage in the VTEC rocker arm solenoid control circuit is high, from an open circuit or a short to voltage.
How much does it cost to fix P2649?
Roughly $40 to $300. A connector or wire repair is at the low end, and a new solenoid costs more.
