P2560 Code: Engine Coolant Level Low
The P2560 code means the sensor in the coolant reservoir detects a low level. Check it as soon as possible, because an engine without coolant overheats and can be badly damaged. Do not keep driving until you have checked the level.

What the P2560 code means
Some vehicles have a level sensor in the expansion tank. When the level drops below the minimum, the computer stores the P2560 code and turns on a warning.
The real cause is usually a leak: hoses, radiator, water pump, EGR cooler or head gasket. The sensor itself or its connector can also fail.
Do not open the reservoir with the engine hot. The coolant comes out under pressure and at more than 90 °C (194 °F).
P2560 code symptoms
- Coolant level warning.
- High engine temperature.
- Puddles or stains under the vehicle.
- Sweet white smoke if the leak is internal.
Likely causes of the P2560 code
- Coolant leak from hoses, radiator, pump or cap.
- Internal consumption from a head gasket or an EGR cooler.
- Faulty level sensor. Confirm it by comparing its reading with the real level.
- Corroded sensor connector.
How to diagnose the P2560 code step by step
- Check the level with the engine cold.
- Look for leaks with a cooling system pressure tester.
- Check the oil. A milky look points to an internal leak.
- Test the sensor. With the correct level it should not give a warning.
How to fix the P2560 code
- Repair the leak and refill with the specified coolant.
- Bleed the air out of the cooling system.
- Replace the sensor if it gives a warning with the correct level.
- Clear the codes and verify.
Technical reference data
- Use the coolant type the manufacturer calls for. Do not mix different types.
- Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
Never trust a topped-off reservoir if the level keeps dropping. A level that falls with no puddle under the car can mean coolant is burning inside the engine, and the P2560 code will come back until the cause is found.
P2560 on Chevrolet, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and BMW
Common on these makes.
P2560 on Chevrolet With 1.4 and 1.8 Engines
On Chevrolet vehicles with the 1.4 and 1.8 engines, leaks at the reservoir and the thermostat are common.
