P2261 Code: Turbo/Supercharger Bypass Valve Mechanical
The P2261 code means the turbo bypass valve, also called the blow off or recirculation valve, is not working properly. It either fails to open when you lift off the throttle or leaks boost when it should be closed. You can drive with caution, but expect a loss of power.
- Severity
- Medium
- Can I keep driving?
- Yes, but with caution
- Estimated cost
- $50 to $350
- Difficulty
- Medium
- System
- Fuel Injection
- Applies to
- All OBD2 vehicles
Common in: Audi, Volkswagen

What the P2261 code means
When you lift off the throttle while the turbo is spinning, the throttle plate closes and the pressure has to escape through the bypass valve back to the turbo inlet. If it does not, the air slams into the compressor and slows it down. If the valve stays open, the engine loses boost pressure.
The computer detects this with the boost pressure sensor. The most common cause is a ruptured valve diaphragm or a failed control solenoid.
The P2261 code is a mechanical fault code, which means the computer is judging how the valve behaves, not just whether its electrical circuit is complete. That is why a visual and hands-on check of the valve matters as much as any electrical test.
P2261 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Loss of power.
- A whistle or whoosh when you lift off the throttle.
- Jerking when you shift gears.
Likely causes of the P2261 code
- Ruptured valve diaphragm. The most common cause.
- Failed control solenoid. Test it by commanding it with the scan tool.
- Loose control or vacuum hose. Check for cracks and clamps, especially in the hot areas.
- Connector or wiring. Check the lock, the pins and whether there is moisture or corrosion.
How to diagnose the P2261 code step by step
- Inspect the valve and its diaphragm.
- Command it with the scan tool and check that it moves.
- Check the control and intake hoses.
- Measure the boost pressure with the scan tool during an acceleration.
How to fix the P2261 code
- Replace the valve or its diaphragm.
- Replace the control solenoid.
- Repair the hoses.
- Clear the codes and verify on the road.
After the repair, do a road test with a hard acceleration and watch the boost on the scan tool. If the P2261 code does not return and boost builds normally, the repair worked.
Technical reference data
- Typical boost pressure on a turbo gasoline engine: 0.8 to 1.5 bar (about 12 to 22 psi) above atmospheric.
- These are reference values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is very common on turbocharged direct injection engines. Reinforced replacement valves exist for the ones that fail repeatedly.
