P2177 Code: System Too Lean Off Idle (Bank 1)
The P2177 code means the bank 1 mixture is too lean with the engine above idle, at part load. The computer reached its correction limit in that specific condition, which helps a lot when you are hunting for the cause. Think vacuum leak, a dirty MAF sensor or low fuel pressure.

What the P2177 code means
This code is a more precise version of P0171. On top of saying the mixture is lean, it says under what condition it happens. Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder number 1. On an inline engine there is only bank 1.
If the P2177 code shows a lean mixture off idle or under load, the most likely explanation is that fuel is short or that the MAF sensor is measuring less air than is really coming in.
The key tool is the fuel trims, read in three conditions: idle, 2,500 rpm with no load, and driving under load. The pattern across those three tells you a lot. A lean trim that is worst at idle and improves at 2,500 rpm points to a vacuum leak, while a trim that gets worse as airflow rises points to a fuel delivery or MAF problem.
P2177 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Rough idle.
- Hesitation or surging when you accelerate.
- Possible misfires.
Likely causes of the P2177 code
- Dirty MAF sensor or one that reads low. The error grows with airflow.
- Low fuel pressure. A weak pump, a plugged filter or the regulator.
- Dirty injectors. They deliver less fuel than the computer calculates.
- Intake leak after the MAF, between the sensor and the throttle.
How to diagnose the P2177 code step by step
- Read the fuel trims in the three conditions and compare both banks.
- Check the freeze frame data to confirm the condition in which the code appeared.
- Look for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine, or by pinching hoses while you watch the short term trim.
- Measure the fuel pressure at idle and under load.
- Clean or test the MAF sensor and compare its reading with the engine size.
- Check the front oxygen sensor, its response and its heater.
How to fix the P2177 code
- Repair the vacuum or intake leak.
- Correct the fuel pressure.
- Clean or replace the MAF sensor if it measures wrong.
- Clear the learned trims and the codes, and verify in the three conditions.
Technical reference data
- Normal total fuel trim: between -10% and +10%.
- Past +25% or below -25%, most computers store the code.
- Reference MAF reading at idle: 2 to 7 g/s depending on engine size.
- These are general reference values, so check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is common on high-mileage Ford, Mazda, Chevrolet and Nissan engines. The crankcase ventilation hoses and the plastic intake manifold gaskets are known weak points.
Look at those first when the trim is worst at idle, because they are cheap to inspect and often explain the whole code.
