P2071 Code: Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Stuck Closed
The P2071 code means the intake manifold tuning valve (IMTV) does not move and stayed closed, which lowers torque in part of the rpm range. The engine runs with a little less performance. It is safe to drive, and the fix is usually an actuator, a vacuum line or a cleaning.

What the P2071 code means
Some engines, mostly V6s, have an intake manifold with two chambers joined by a tuning valve (IMTV, Intake Manifold Tuning Valve). By opening or closing it according to engine speed, the computer takes advantage of the pressure waves in the intake air to fill the cylinders better.
When the computer commands a change of position and detects that the effect does not happen, either from the position sensor signal or from the response of the MAP sensor, it stores the P2071 code.
The usual causes are a bad electric actuator, a vacuum solenoid that is not supplying vacuum, a loose hose, or the valve itself jammed by carbon.
P2071 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Lack of power in a specific rpm range.
- Slightly higher fuel use.
Likely causes of the P2071 code
- Bad valve actuator. It does not move the inner flap.
- Vacuum solenoid or hose that is loose, broken or not holding vacuum.
- Valve jammed by carbon. This is most common with high mileage.
- Connector or wiring that is corroded or broken.
How to diagnose the P2071 code step by step
- Activate the valve with the scan tool and watch whether the actuator moves.
- Check the vacuum hoses and test the vacuum at the pneumatic actuator.
- Measure power and ground at the actuator with the key on.
- Check the movement by hand with the engine off.
How to fix the P2071 code
- Replace the actuator or the solenoid that failed.
- Repair the vacuum hoses.
- Clean the valve if it is jammed.
- Clear the codes and verify with a road test.
Technical reference data
- Vacuum actuator: it should hold about 15 to 20 inHg.
- Electric actuator: 12 volt supply and control from the computer.
- These values are only a guide, so look up the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is common on engines with a two-chamber intake manifold, as listed below.
P2071 on Ford, Mazda and GM V6 Engines
It is frequent on Ford, Mazda and GM V6 engines.
P2071 on Nissan
It also shows up on some Nissan engines that have a two-chamber manifold.
