P0949 Code: Auto Shift Manual Adaptive Learning Not Complete

The P0949 code means the automated manual transmission does not have its learned values stored: the clutch touch point and the selection and engagement positions. The cure is to run the learning procedures with a scan tool. Nothing is necessarily broken.

What the P0949 code means

Automated manual transmissions (Opel Easytronic, Fiat Dualogic, Toyota MMT, BMW SMG, Ford Durashift, Volkswagen ASG) and many dual-clutch gearboxes use electric or hydraulic actuators to release the clutch, pick the gear plane (selection) and engage the gear (engagement). The transmission computer watches every actuator through position sensors.

After the battery is disconnected, or after the clutch, an actuator, a sensor or the gearbox computer is replaced, the learned values are wiped. The computer stores the P0949 code, and the gearbox can work badly, or not at all, until the learning is done again.

The procedure changes from one manufacturer to another. Some call for the engine running with the brake pedal pressed, others for a specific key-on sequence. In nearly every case it takes a compatible scan tool.

P0949 code symptoms

  • Harsh shifts or jerking when pulling away.
  • The gearbox will not engage a gear.
  • Warning light or message on the dash.

Likely causes of the P0949 code

  1. Battery disconnected or run flat.
  2. Clutch, actuator or sensor replaced with no learning done afterward.
  3. New computer with no learned values in it.

How to diagnose the P0949 code step by step

  1. Run the learning procedures with the scan tool, following the manufacturer procedure.

How to fix the P0949 code

  • Run the learning procedures.
  • Clear the P0949 code and verify.

Technical reference data

  • The procedure depends on the manufacturer.
  • Reference values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

The makes below are where this family of codes is most common. In many hydraulic systems the actuator fluid is a specific one, and the reservoir should be checked regularly.

P0949 on Opel

Very common on the Opel Easytronic.

P0949 on Fiat

Very common on the Fiat Dualogic.

P0949 on Toyota

Very common on the Toyota MMT.

P0949 on Smart

Very common on Smart cars with this type of gearbox.

P0949 on BMW

Very common on the BMW SMG.

Frequently asked questions about P0949

What is adaptive learning?
It is the gearbox memory of where the clutch and the actuators sit. The computer needs those positions to shift smoothly.
Can I do it myself?
Only with a compatible scan tool. Without one, you will need a shop that can run the procedure for your gearbox.
Why does it get lost?
It is lost when the battery is disconnected or when parts such as the clutch, an actuator, a sensor or the computer are replaced.
How much does it cost to fix P0949?
Between $30 and $150 at a shop, since it is mostly the time to run the procedure.
What does the P0949 code mean?
It means the gearbox learned values are missing. Nothing has to be broken, but the transmission will not shift well until the learning is done.
