P0831 Code: Clutch Pedal Switch A Circuit Low
The P0831 code means the signal from clutch pedal switch A is below its minimum value. The main effect is an engine that will not start, or a cruise control that is disabled. A signal wire shorted to ground or a missing reference is the usual cause.

What the P0831 code means
On vehicles with a manual transmission, the clutch pedal switch keeps the engine from starting unless the pedal is pressed, turns off cruise control when you press the pedal, and helps the computer smooth the engine speed during shifts.
It is a switch: the computer sees a high or low voltage depending on its position. A low signal, which sets the P0831 code, is usually caused by the signal wire shorted to ground or by a missing reference.
The switch and its stop wear out with use of the pedal. If the signal fails, the engine may not start, the cruise control may stop working, or you may get jerks when shifting.
To confirm it, unplug the component with the key on and watch what happens to the reading or the code. If the value jumps to the opposite extreme, the wiring is good and the component is the one pulling the signal to ground. If nothing changes, look for the short in the wire, starting where the harness rubs against the engine, the chassis or the exhaust.
P0831 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- The engine will not start, or the cruise control is disabled.
- The engine does not crank even when you press the clutch.
- Cruise control that does not work.
Likely causes of the P0831 code
- Signal wire shorted to ground because the harness rubs against the engine, the chassis or a bracket.
- Power reference shorted. If several sensors fail at once, suspect the shared reference.
- Damaged switch with an internal short.
- Connector with water or corrosion, which creates a path to ground.
How to diagnose the P0831 code step by step
- Read the switch value on the scan tool and compare it with what is expected.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, water or loose pins.
- Check power and ground with the key on: a correct reference and less than 0.1 V of drop on the ground.
- Measure the signal with the connector plugged in and see whether it changes with the condition.
- Do the wiggle test on the harness with the scan tool in graphing mode.
- Check the continuity of each wire up to the computer (under 1 ohm).
- Watch the switch state on the scan tool as you press and release the pedal.
How to fix the P0831 code
- Repair the connector or the wiring.
- Replace the switch if the tests confirm it.
- Correct the real condition, if there is one.
- Clear the codes and verify with a road test.
Technical reference data
- The switch or sensor is powered from the computer: check the manual for the values.
- These are approximate values: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
