P0314Generic code

P0314 Code: Single Cylinder Misfire (Cylinder not Specified)

The P0314 code means the computer detected misfires in a single cylinder but cannot tell which one. It is diagnosed the same way as a P030X code, starting with finding the cylinder. You can drive with caution, but the engine needs attention soon.

What the P0314 code means

Some computers can see that the misfire pattern belongs to a single cylinder but cannot assign it with confidence (for example, when the position signals are not very precise). In that case they store the P0314 code instead of P0301 through P0312.

Diagnosis starts by identifying the cylinder: use the misfire counters on the scan tool, measure the temperature of each exhaust pipe with an infrared thermometer (the cylinder that is misfiring runs colder), or unplug the injectors one at a time with the engine idling.

See the P0300 guide for the method of swapping coils and spark plugs.

P0314 code symptoms

  • Engine shaking.
  • Check engine light on or flashing.
  • Loss of power.

Likely causes of the P0314 code

  1. Spark plug or ignition coil on one cylinder.
  2. Clogged injector.
  3. Localized vacuum leak.
  4. Low compression in one cylinder.

How to diagnose the P0314 code step by step

  1. Look at the per-cylinder counters if the scan tool shows them.
  2. Measure the temperature of each exhaust manifold outlet with an infrared thermometer.
  3. Use the swap method with the coil and the spark plug.
  4. Measure the compression.

How to fix the P0314 code

  • Repair the component on the cylinder you identified.
  • Clear the code and verify.

Once the cylinder is found, the repair is the same as for the matching P0301 through P0312 code.

Technical reference data

  • Typical compression: 10 to 14 bar (about 145 to 200 psi) on a gasoline engine.
  • These values are for orientation only. Check the manufacturer data for your engine.

This code is frequent on some Ford vehicles.

This code is frequent on some Mazda vehicles.

Frequently asked questions about P0314

How is it different from P0300?
P0300 means misfires in several cylinders or at random. The P0314 code means misfires in one cylinder that the computer could not identify.
How do I find the cylinder?
Use the misfire counters on the scan tool, or measure the temperature of each exhaust outlet. The cylinder that misfires runs colder.
Can I drive with a P0314 code?
With caution. A flashing check engine light means you should slow down and get it checked, because the catalytic converter can be damaged.
How much does it cost to fix P0314?
Between $20 and $600 depending on what is failing in the cylinder.
What does the P0314 code mean?
It is a generic OBD2 code that means a single cylinder is misfiring and the computer could not say which one.
What is the most common cause of P0314?
A spark plug or ignition coil on one cylinder, followed by a clogged injector. Finding the cylinder first saves a lot of guesswork.
