C0121Manufacturer-specific code

C0121 Code: ABS Valve Relay Circuit Failure

The C0121 code means there is a fault in the relay that powers the ABS valves. The ABS is left disabled, and a weak battery or a poor ground is often the real cause.

What the C0121 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The ABS module powers its valves through a relay (often internal). If it does not detect the expected voltage when it activates the relay, it stores the C0121 code. Low battery voltage or a poor ground cause this code often.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

Many shops waste time replacing the module when the origin was a weak battery. Charge the battery, check that the alternator gives between 13.5 and 14.7 V, and clear the code. If it does not come back, the problem was the supply.

C0121 code symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lights on.

Likely causes of the C0121 code

  1. Low battery voltage or an alternator that does not charge. The module cannot activate its valves.
  2. ABS supply fuse that is blown or has a poor contact in the fuse box.
  3. Module ground that is loose or corroded. It causes intermittent faults that are hard to track down.
  4. Internal relay of the module. Worn contacts or cracked solder joints on the board.

How to diagnose the C0121 code step by step

  1. Measure the battery voltage and the charging voltage.
  2. Check the fuses and the module ground.
  3. Measure the voltage drop across the module ground. It should be under 0.2 V with the system active.

How to fix the C0121 code

  • Correct the supply and the grounds.
  • Repair or replace the ABS module.

Technical reference data

  • Minimum operating voltage of the ABS: about 10 V.
  • Normal charging voltage: 13.5 to 14.7 V.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

Always rule out the battery, the fuses and the ground before you condemn the module. They are the cheapest things to fix and the most common cause.

This code is common on GM vehicles.

Frequently asked questions about C0121

What does the C0121 code mean?
It means the ABS module found a fault in the relay that powers the ABS valves. It did not see the voltage it expected when it activated the relay.
Can I drive with a C0121 code?
Yes, the C0121 code does not stop the car from running, but the ABS is off. The normal brakes keep working.
Does the battery matter?
A lot. A weak battery or a poor ground can set this code on its own.
What should I check first?
The battery, the fuses and the ground, in that order.
How much does it cost to fix C0121?
Between $0 and $1,200. Correcting a loose ground costs nothing, while a module repair or replacement is at the high end.
Will a C0121 code clear itself?
It can if the cause was a temporary low voltage, such as a weak battery that was later charged. If the ground or the module is at fault, it will come back.
